Corpus Christi Firefighter Passes Away in Tragic Motorcycle Crash

A Corpus Christi firefighter passed away on Tuesday from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash.

About the Motorcycle Crash

According to KRIS-TV, Charles Gubitosi, a 30-year-old veteran of the Corpus Christi Fire Department, was traveling on Highway 35 in Aransas Pass on Monday night when he accidentally drove off the highway, crashing his motorcycle.

Gubitosi was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, October 6th in the afternoon. He was an organ donor, and his organs may have saved up to eight lives. He leaves behind two sons.

There was a special ceremony held for “Goo-bee,” as he was known by his friends, on Thursday. The turnout from friends, family, and the community showed the impact that he made on his community.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • In 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, an increase for the third straight year.
  • About 93,000 motorcyclists were injured, also an increase for the third straight year.
  • Motorcyclists account for about 15% of all traffic fatalities, while making up only 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States.
  • Texas has the second most fatalities for any state, with 428.
