Corpus Christi to Make Walking and Cycling Path Improvements

Lauren Lopez3 years ago

According to the Caller-Times, the city of Corpus Christi, Texas held a public forum on Thursday to discuss plans to create and/or redraw infrastructure to provide for new lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.

Walking and Cycling Path Proposals

At the forum was a panel of engineers and city planners to answer questions and hear input from some three dozen Corpus residents that attended the forum. Public input varied from received rumble strips to general safety concerns.

Motivation for the creation of these infrastructure improvements include making residents healthier by encouraging walking as a form of exercise and combating the high instance of diabetes. In addition the community hopes to increase awareness and safety about sharing the roads with cyclists and pedestrians.

The city’s plan addresses vehicular, pedestrian and cycling traffic, and suggests the reorganization of street designs to efficiently utilize space that currently exists. A large component of the city’s plan would include “road diets”, which is simply the repainting of street lines and markers. This technique could result in the addition of bicycling lanes, turn lanes or wider sidewalks.

While there are funds available to begin and complete the projects, all improvements and changes will be made gradually and incrementally. A November 12 meeting will be open to the public to present the complete plan.
