Daily News and the Fatal Crash

While commuting to work on her bicycle, accomplished artist Leah Sylvian was killed on Tuesday at 6:45 am in Brooklyn, New York. She was hit by a truck, according to officials. She was headed north in a bike lane and was struck by the center of the truck. She ended up under the rear wheel.

The driver of the truck, Joseph Cherry, age 52, was arrested at the scene and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. Cherry was charged because Sylvain had the right of way when he turned in front of her.

According to witnesses, Sylvain was not wearing a helmet, and was taken to Woodhull Hospital with head trauma, where she died. Edwin Zapata, a construction worker, has stated that he saw paramedics putting Sylvain on a gurney and into an ambulance.

Sylvain worked at Scenic Corp. in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a theater set painter. Sylvain helped found the Mill Pond Church in Newington, New York. People close to her have released statements describing her as an awesome person.
