Cyclist Killed in Fatal Collision with Tractor-Trailer

A fatal trucking accident in Downey left a bicyclist dead last week.

About the Downey Trucking Accident

According to The Downey Patriot, the victim, a 47-year-old man from Norwalk, was killed Wednesday morning at around 6:11 a.m. while riding his bicycle.

Authorities report that the man was riding the bicycle west on Stewart and Gray Road when he collided with a tractor-trailer that was travelling south on Bellflower Boulevard.

The driver of the tractor-trailer has been identified as a 59-year-old resident of Lakewood; it did not appear that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident and was release after being questioned by police.

Police said that the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, but his identity has not been publicly released.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,964 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2013. This marks a slight increase from the 3,944 trucking fatalities reported in 2012.
  • Of those killed in 2013:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,857 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 390 were listed as nonoccupants, including pedalcyclists and pedestrians
  • An additional 95,00  individuals were injured in trucking accidents in 2013.
