Dallas Neighborhood Remembers Man Killed in Dump Truck Accident

Residents of an East Dallas neighborhood are mourning the death of Jesus Rivas, who died Friday after his vehicle was struck by an oncoming dump truck.

Two Killed in Fatal Head-on Collision

“He was a sweet man. He worked hard. He worked all the time.” – a neighbor of Rivas’ as published by CBS-DFW

According to CBS-DFW, both Rivas and the driver of a dump truck were pronounced dead following a head-on collision on I-635 in Batch Springs.

Though authorities are still investigating the crash, it is believed that the dump truck driver crossed over the median and hit Rivas’ pickup truck on the southbound side of I-635 around 12:30 pm Sunday.

Rivas was the owner of the local business Del Dorte Bakery and was described by his employees as a father figure who was always trying to brighten up their days.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas experienced a 10.82 percent increase in the number of traffic related fatalities from 2011 to 2012 with the number of deaths rising from 3,067 in 2011 to 3,399 in 2012.

In addition, 87,087 people were seriously injured in 63,610 “serious injury crashes” in 2012.

The 2012 data for Texas suggests that:

  • One person was killed in an auto accident every 2 hours and 35 minutes.
  • One person was injured in an auto accident every 2 minutes and 17 seconds
  • One reportable collision occurred every 75 second.
