Dallas Nurse Hit by Shuttle Bus, Killed

Authorities in Dallas are investigating an incident in which a nurse at Parkland Memorial Hospital was struck and killed a shuttle bus.

Description of the Dallas Pedestrian Accident

According to the Dallas Morning News, Randal Dygert, 61, was crossing Harry Hines Boulevard near the hospital around 7 a.m. Friday when he was hit. Dygert was pronounced dead on the scene. His cause of death was from the impact of the privately owned shuttle bus.

According to the Dallas police spokesman, Officer Chinh Le, a second nurse was struck as well. Fortunately, she is in stable condition.

Investigators also reported that the driver, who was unidentified, did not immediately stop after hitting Dygert.  Dallas police are trying to identify the driver.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • In 2012, more than two-thirds (69%) of the pedestrians killed were males, and the male pedestrian fatality rate per 100,000 population was 2.13 — more than double the rate for females (0.91 per 100,000 population).
  • 90-percent of all pedestrian fatalities recorded in 2012 involved a single vehicle.
  • In 2012, Texas ranked the second highest in auto-pedestrian accidents with 478 pedestrian deaths.
