Damaged Tire Caused Accident: 15 Dead

Baisha Kreuzer4 years ago

The front tire of a pickup truck came apart and likely caused the weekend crash in Goliad which killed 15 people, news outlets report. The accident involved immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, who, according to a report by CNN news, were heading to Houston, TX.

About the Accident

The vehicle was a Ford pickup truck suspected to have held 23 people, 11 of which were killed instantly, including two girls and two children, according to trooper officials. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The survivors were rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, four more died. In a report by Fox News, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman, Gerald Bryant, identified the cause of the accident as a front right tire malfunction. The tire fell apart and caused the car to swerve out of control and crash into a tree along the rural South Texas highway. Bryant also was able to identify the driver as 22-year-old Ricardo Mendoza-Pineda from Mexico, who unfortunately died instantly in the crash.

Not the First Overloaded Vehicle Accident

Accidents just as the one described above happen periodically. Illegal immigrants who attempt to travel north of the border may overlook important vehicle safety issues and endanger themselves and/or others around them. According to a news outlet, in April 2012, 18 Mexican immigrants were traveling in a mini-van that became involved in a terrible accident in an attempt to escape Border Patrol. Nine of the passengers died instantly in the accident and the 15-year-old driver, who survived the crash, was charged with the murder of those passengers in state court, along with six adults who faced an array of federal charges against them.
