Dangers of Hot Car Heatstroke

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Texas Department of Transportation are teaming up with local communities to spread the word about the dangers of hot car heatstroke. The campaign aims to inform parents and caregivers of young children about the dangers of heatstroke death in hot cars and how to avoid it.

“Look Before You Lock”

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials, the campaign aims to urge parents and caregivers to think “Where's baby? Look before you lock.”

Texas is among the top states affected by deadly heat waves each year, and statewide, at least 80 children have lost their lives to vehicular heatstroke since 1998. Sadly, most of these deaths occurred among children ages 3 and younger.

Tips to Avoid Hot Car Heatstroke

  • Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even if the windows are partially open or the engine is running with the air conditioning on.
  • Make a habit of looking in the vehicles front and back seats before locking the door and walking away.
  • Ask the childcare provider to call if the child does not show up for care as expected.
  • Do things that serve as a reminder a child is in the vehicle, such as placing your purse or briefcase by the child, writing a note or using a stuffed animal to indicate a child is in the vehicle.
  • Teach children a vehicle is not a play area and store keys out of a child’s reach.
  • If you see a child alone in a hot vehicle- immediately call 911 or the local emergency number.
