Delayed Recall Plans for Chrysler Jeeps Approved

Antarvir Kaur3 years ago

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been conducting an investigation on the recall plans devised by Chrysler Group for their Jeep Cherokees and Jeep Liberties, which are at risk of igniting after a rear end collision that could break their gas tanks.

Problems with the Recall Plan

  • According to USA Today, Chrysler was initially asked to recall 2.7 million Cherokee and Liberty vehicles. The company refused.
  • Chrysler argued that the Jeeps were performing similarly to other cars made during that time.
  • Chrysler made plans to add trailer hitches to the Jeeps that do not already have them in order to provide more protection against collisions.
  • NHTSA did not approve the plan at the beginning but has investigated since then and seems to have no qualms about the plans now.

Controversy Surrounding the Chrysler Jeep Recall

It seems that not everyone agrees with the final decision made by the NHTSA, however. “It is tragic that NHTSA approved Chrysler's sham trailer hitch recall for Jeeps that explode in rear impacts. The government is closing its investigation into older-model Jeeps with fuel tanks that could rupture and cause fires,” says Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety.

These reservations against Chrysler’s plans may come from the center’s knowledge of 161 deaths in 115 crashes of said vehicles.

1.6 million Jeep Cherokees and Jeep Liberties will be recalled.
