Driver Arrested in Hit-and-Run Accident that Left Young Boy Dead

A Colorado motorist has revealed to police that he was street racing when he fatally struck an 11-year-old boy and fled the scene.

Man Confesses to Racing before the Fatal Hit-and-Run

The Denver Post reports Oswaldo Lopez, 21, is in a Denver County jail with a bond set at $50,000 for killing 11-year-old Michael Espinoza.

  • Lopez told investigators that he was street racing in a 2013 dodge charger alongside a motorcycle when he hit the young boy.
  • Lopez continued to drive home after noticing the boy’s body “striking the bottom of his vehicle as he drove over him,” without contacting the police.
  • It is believed Lopez was travelling at roughly 60 mph before striking Michael.

Details of the Hit and Run Accident

  • According to police reports, Michael was struck by Lopez around 8pm Sunday trying to cross Federal Boulevard on the bridge across West Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado.
  • Police found a portion of Lopez’s bumper and his license place in the road after the accident, and were waiting for Lopez at his home by 8:50 pm that evening.
  • Michael was known around town as “Mikey,” his father said he was an active kid who loved sports, dogs, snakes and anything outdoors and had a huge heart.

  • Michael’s death was the second hit-and-run fatality to occur in diver since the beginning of the year – last year, there were only three total.
  • Additionally, there have been a total of 775 hit-and-run accidents reported in Denver so far this year.
  • In Colorado, 104 people were killed in 99 hit-and-run accidents between 2008 and 2012. In 2012, there were 34 hit-and-run fatalities, nearly double the number recorded in 2011.
