Drunk Driver Gets Four Years in Jail for Young Golfer’s Death

Amanda Lowery, 42, was drunk behind the wheel and crashed into another vehicle carrying four passengers, killing one and badly injuring the other three.

About the Fatal DWI Accident

  • According to Stuff, the accident occurred on February 14, 2013 on a state highway.
  • Lowery had a blood alcohol content of 190 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood; the limit is 90 milligrams.
  • While driving drunk, Lowery crossed the center line and crashed head-on into the driver’s side of the victims’ car.
  • The victims were Shayna Kumitau, 18, a promising golfer; Abby Benge, 19; Rebekka Marsh, 19; and Samuel Tait, 22, all of whom were friends.
  • Lowery has been sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in jail after pleading guilty to driving with excessive blood alcohol causing extensive injuries.

Injuries Suffered in the Car Crash

  • Kumitau died 5 days after the crash from her injuries and resulting liver transplant.
  • Benge was driving the vehicle and had to be cut from the car; she was in a coma for several weeks after breaking nearly a dozen bones, including her left knee, ankle, heel, and her left and right femur, jaw, and collarbone; she also had a severe head injury.
  • Marsh suffered broken bones, including in her feet and ankle, and cuts.
  • Tait suffered multiple broken bones, including the ribs and vertebrae, along with a severe concussion, bruising, and cuts.
