About the Cycling Accident

The Brownsville Herald reports that 24-year-old Emilio Gomez has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for intoxication manslaughter.

On April 17, 2014, Gomez struck 38-year-old cyclist Eduardo Arguelles as he was cycling with a friend near the intersection of Expressway 281 and Trenton Road. The collision resulted in Arguelles body landing in the bed of Gomez’s pickup – Gomez continued driving, fleeing from the scene.

Officers found Gomez and his passenger, Nelson Cantu, trying to dispose of Arguelles’ body by dumping it into a drainage ditch less than two hours later. Gomez was determined to have a blood alcohol level of .10.

Gomez pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter last month. Cantu is still facing charges of failing to report a felony with serious bodily injury or death.
