A York City woman was killed on Wednesday after she was hit by a bus carrying four children.

Details about the Pedestrian School Bus Accident

FOX 43 News is reporting that a woman in her 70s was killed on Wednesday after she was hit by a school bus. The woman has been identified as 71-year-old Evelyn B. Miller of York City, Pennsylvania.

According to police, the accident happened at about 7:40 a.m. near the intersection of South Beaver and West Princess. The victim was transported to the York Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The driver of the bus and four students from Eastern York were on their way to St. Patrick and Logos Academy. The driver and the students were not harmed in the accident.

The bus company and the two school districts of students that were involved in the accident issued statements to the press and to the parents of students at their schools regarding the incident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • From 2004-2013, there were a total of 123 pedestrians that were killed by school-transportation vehicles that were over the age of 19.
  • Most of the pedestrian deaths that occurred in that same time period happened from 7-7:59 a.m. – a time when school bus activity is very high.
  • Of the 239 total number of pedestrians that were killed in school-transportation fatalities, 189 of them were actually hit by a school-transportation vehicle itself.
