Family Sues Dentist Following 3-Year-Old’s Death
3-Year-Old Falls into Coma Following Dentist Visit
- According to reports, 3-year-old Finley Boyle went into cardiac arrest and lapsed into a coma following a visit to Island Dentistry for Children in which the child was scheduled to receive four root canals.
- The family alleges that a technician employed by Dr. Geyer gave Finle five different drugs during the visit, including Demarol and other sedatives.
- The family further claims that after Finley began to suffer cardiac arrest, CPR was delayed for 26 minutes as Dr. Geyer searched for another doctor to administer the emergency procedure leading to extensive brain damage.
- Finley remained in a coma for a month before passing away Friday night at Hospice Hawaii in Kailua.
Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit
A previous negligence lawsuit filed by the Finley family five days ago against Dr. Geyer and other staff is now moot as the family is now suing for wrongful death.
The previously filed documents allege that the procedures performed on Finely were unnecessary, that staff with Island Dentistry for Children were negligent in their care of Finely and that Dr. Geyer was not a certified pediatric dentist.
According to the family, though Finley was given strong sedatives prior to the root canals, there was no record of vital signs during the procedure.
Rep. Della Au Belatti, chair of the House Committee on Health, has announced plans to review state laws meant to enforce a standard of care in pediatric dentistry.
