Fatal Crash in Valhalla, N.Y.

A fatal single-vehicle crash in Valhalla, N.Y. claimed the life of one woman on Friday morning, according to a report from Lo Hud.

About the Fatal Valhalla Crash

A Mount Pleasant police officer, Lt. Mike Pierce, told reporters the accident happened at approximately 4 a.m. on Friday. A Honda Pilot SUV was traveling south on Columbus Street near Locust Street when the driver struck a rock wall. The SUV rolled over and crashed roof-first into a nearby utility pole, splitting the pole in half. Authorities are still investigating what caused the crash.

A female driver in the SUV, the vehicle’s only occupant, was killed in the crash. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene while workers spent about four hours freeing her body from the wreckage.

The crash also took out electric service to about 100 Consolidated Edison customers.

New York Car Crash Statistics

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles provides the following information about car crashes in 2012:

  • Statewide there were 1,082 fatal crashes that resulted in 1,163 fatalities.
  • There was a total of 294,757 motor vehicle crashes.
  • Approximately 169,205 people were injured in traffic-related accidents. Of those injuries, 101,605 injured were drivers; 45,532 were passengers; 15,607 were pedestrians; and 5,929 were bicyclists.
  • Human factors such as alcohol use, speeding, and distracted driving accounted for about 78.2 percent of all crashes.
