Fatal Head-on Collision in Henrico, Va.

Police in Henrico, Va. say a woman, identified as Beverly Luther, 86, was killed on Wednesday after her vehicle collided head-on with another car, according to CBS 6.

About the Fatal Head-on Collision

Investigators say the accident happened at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday evening. A Volvo, driven by Luther, was traveling north near the intersection of Parham and Midway. Luther’s Volvo, for reasons unknown, crossed the median where she collided head-on with an oncoming Mercedes.

Luther was killed in the collision. The driver of the Mercedes, described only as an adult female, also sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash.

Henrico police do not suspect alcohol or speed to have been contributing factors in the accident.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 33 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older in the U.S. in 2009. The CDC also notes that fatal crash rates rise steadily after the age of 75 and are most notable after the age of 80. Each year, over 5,000 older adults are killed in motor vehicle crashes and an additional 183,000 are injured.
