Kaitlynn Martin3 months ago

Fines of $173,400 were issued for two companies working on the Minnesota Vikings' new stadium following safety violations that resulted in the death of one worker as well as injury to another.

About the Stadium Accident

According to KARE 11, the contractor for U.S. Bank Stadium, Mortenson Construction of Golden Valley and subcontractor Berwald Roofing of North St. Paulwere cited following an investigation by the state Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Jeramie Gruber,Faribaultand another man were installing a solid roof at the stadium in August when they fell and slid down the roof, according to OSHA.

The second man survived striking a post, but needed 48 stitches in his leg. Gruber broke through a guardrail and fell to a lower platform.

Although reports do not provide a full explanation, Berwald received the most serious accusations of willfully failing to have workers use proper fall protection.

Overview of Issued Fines

OSHA found that Berwald knew about a hazardous condition, but did not make an effort to fix it. Berwald was then cited for $70,000. Additionally, they were fined $69,100 for general safety and duty clauses.

Mortenson Construction was fined $34,300 for General Safety and Health Provisions.

OSHA claim that both companies are contesting the fines and it may be months or years before the case is closed.
