Faulty Doors Prompt Recall of over 160,000 Mazda 6 Cars

David Turnbull3 years ago

Mazda Motor Corp is issuing a recall of 161,400 Mazda 6 sedans in the United States following concerns that the vehicles doors could inadvertently open while the car is in motion leading to increased risk of accident, injury or death.

Reason for the Mazda 6 Recall

  • According to the Chicago Tribune, the cause for concern and the recall is due to three mounting screws that could become loosened from the door latch mounting unit.
  • The loose mounting screws could lead to the door not poperly latching and lead to a potential risk of the door opening  while the vehicle is traveling.
  • The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there were four consumer complaints issued during a preliminary probe into the recall in May of 2013.

NHTSA Reports Proposed Resolution

  • The vehicles invovled in the recall were manufactured at a plant in Flat Rock, Michigan which was jointly operated by Mazda and Ford Motor Co. until 2012.
  • The recallis lmited to Mazda 6 sedans with a year model between and including 2009 and 2013.
  • The NHTSA reports that Mazda will re-tighten the screws after applying a thread-locking adhesive to them.
  • The recall is expected to begin October 18.
