FDA Sets New Regulations for Arsenic in Apple Juice
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is setting a new limit on the level of Arsenic allowed in apple juice. Arsenic is a known carcinogen, and consumer groups have pushed for new regulations for years.
New Regulations for Arsenic in Apple Juice
“There isn’t a known threshold for the carcinogenic effect,” – Michael Taylor, Deputy Commissioner of Foods for the FDA (as published on NPR.org)
• No more than 10 parts per billion of arsenic is allowed in apple juice.
• If a product contains more than the regulated amount, it will be removed from market.
• The regulation specifically targets inorganic arsenic—often found in pesticides.
• Regulation allows for low levels of organic arsenic.
• The new guidelines are based on a lifetime of exposure to arsenic and the potential for long-term cancer risks.
Reason for New Regulations
The FDA states the reason for the new regulations is that they do not think the amount of allotted arsenic in apple juice should exceed the levels allowed in water. Currently, the Environment Protection Agency sets levels for drinking water, but this marks the first move in ensuring safe levels in other food and beverages.
Last year, the Consumer’s Union asked for levels to be set as low as 3 parts per billion, but state they are satisfied with the new regulations. The FDA still warns that children under 6 should not drink more than 6 ounces of apple juice a day.
