Federal Agencies Warn against Halloween Contact Lenses

Destiny Baker3 years ago

With Halloween fast approaching, multiple federal agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have begun to warn against the use of novelty or decorative contact lenses citing risks of eye injury and blindness.

Operation Double Vision

  • According to the International Business Times, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, the FDA and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection are all working on a coordinated effort to size counterfeit lenses.
  • This effort not only focuses on discounted or off the market ‘prescription’ lenses, but also decorative and novelty lenses sold at Halloween shops, novelty stores and beauty salons.
  • These types of lenses have been illegal since 2005 as federal agencies and independent researchers have determined that the lenses can lead to permanent eye damage which may result in blindness.
  • These agencies are now working to raise awareness of the dangers of wearing decorative lenses as part of Halloween costumes.

Dangers Associated with Decorative Contact Lenses

“Consumers who buy lenses that were manufactured and sold illegally can experience infections, corneal ulcers and even blindness.” – Dr. Glenda Brown, president of the Georgia Optometric Association as published by the International Business Times

Federal law mandates that all contact lenses require a prescription to ensure the contact fits properly and is manufactured in a way that ensures the wearer's safety.

Wearing illegal contact lenses carries an increased risk of:

  • Corneal Abrasions
  • Open sores
  • Ulcers
  • Cuts
  • Infections
  • Transplants
  • Vision loss
  • Blindness

Research has determined that individuals who were cosmetic contact lenses are 16 times more likely to suffer from keratitis than those who do not.
