Fiat Chrysler Adds Jeeps to Airbag Recall

Erin King1 year ago

In recent consumer news, Fiat Chrysler has added a large number of Jeep Cherokees to a recent recall involving faulty airbag software.

About the Jeep Airbag Recall

According to CBS News Online, Fiat Chrysler has recently added approximately 69,000 Jeep Cherokees to an airbag recall, bringing the total number of 2014 and 2015 recalled Jeep Cherokees to 317,000.

The recall involves faulty airbag software that results in the inflation of the side air bags without due cause.  Majority of the recalled vehicles are located in the U.S, Canada, and Mexico, with the exception of about 52,000 of the vehicles.

The recall comes in light of evidence of a small number of air bag deployments involving Jeep Cherokees in off-road conditions.  Most of the inadvertent airbag deployments, it is reported, took place when the vehicle’s angle of operation changed, causing the Jeep’s operational system to falsely sense a rollover and result in inflation of the airbags.

Chrysler to Make Software Upgrades

Though there is no current knowledge of any crashes or injuries as a result of the airbag deployment, Fiat Chrysler dealers plan to upgrade the vehicle’s software that controls side curtains and seat-mounted side airbags.

The company has reported that dealers will recalibrate the threshold that falsely sets off the vehicle’s airbags.

Meanwhile, those in possession of either 2014 or 2015 Jeep Cherokee vehicles should keep up with the recent recall and be on the lookout for any new updates concerning the recall.
