A former Miss New Jersey beauty queen was critically injured in a car accident that happened on Monday.

Details about the Accident Involving the Beauty Queen

The New York Post is reporting that a former beauty queen is currently in critical condition after speeding and crashing her car into trees on the side of the road in New Jersey, according to authorities.

24-year-old Cara McCollum, who was crowned Miss New Jersey in 2013, was heading north on Route 55 in the Pittsgrove Township when the Ford Mustang she was driving spun off the roadway at about 6:53 p.m. on Monday, according to state police.

Officials indicated that her car hit a tree, continued to spin, hit two more trees, and finally came to a stop on an embankment after the driver’s air bag deployed. Police say that McCollum was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

McCollum was transported to the Cooper University Health Care in Camden in critical condition. Officials at the hospital declined to comment on the condition of the driver at the request of the driver’s family.

At this point in the investigation, it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.

Important Information about Seat Belt Usage

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Young adults (like McCollum) ages 18-24, have the highest crash-related injury rates of all adults.
  • People ages 18-34 are less likely to wear seatbelts than adults ages 35 and over.
  • Seatbelts have the potential to reduce the risk of injuries and death in traffic accidents by about half.
