Former Titans Player Killed in Car Crash

This Saturday night, Rob Bironas, a former Tennessee Titans kicker, died in a car accident.

About the Fatal Car Accident

According to KIII-TV, Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve while driving his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed less than a mile from his home after 11 p.m.

The SUV was speeding and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert. Bironas was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol at the scene.

Bironas was known to be one the NFL’s most accurate kickers. According to the Titans, Bironas made “a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and […] touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field”. Nashville Mayor Karl Dean noted that the fans loved Bironas and that he was “down to earth”.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states:

  • 33,561 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the United States in 2012.
  • In 2012, 2.36 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes.
  • 1,082 more fatalities occured from motor vehicle crashes in 2012 than in 2011 (a 3.3-percent increase)
  • The Tennessee Department of Safety states that there were 995 traffic fatalities in Tennessee in 2013.
