Foster Farms Recalls Chicken Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

At the end of last week, the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture (USDA) produced evidence directly linking Foster Farms chicken to a 16-month-long, nationwide Salmonella outbreak. The evidence, according to USA Today, has triggered a recall of certain Foster Farms chicken products.

About the Foster Farms Chicken Recall

Foster Farms has said it is recalling about 170 different chicken products produced at its Fresno facilities in March of this year. The recall was the result of evidence found by the USDA directly linking the company’s chicken to an outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg that has been ongoing for the past 16 months. Nearly 600 people reported illness as a result of the antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella in about 27 different states.

In October, inspectors at the Foster Farms facilities found poor sanitary conditions including fecal matter on the chicken carcasses and insanitary food contact surfaces. In May, the company said it was placing stricter quality control in place to ensure better sanitary practices. Foster Farms was also linked to chicken recalls due to Salmonella in 2004 and 2012.

USA Today notes that the nature of Salmonella and chicken makes it difficult to compel a company to recall its products. Salmonella naturally exists on chicken and is not recognized as an adulterant by the government because proper handling and preparation kills the bacteria.

Description of the Recalled Chicken

  • Foster Farms says the recall affects products with a “use or freeze by” date between March 21 and March 29.
  • The recalled chicken was distributed to Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
  • The products include drumsticks, thighs, chicken tenders, and livers.
  • The products have one of the following brand labels: Foster Farms, FoodMaxx, Kroger, Safeway, Savemart, Valbest, and Sunland.
