Four Killed in Crash in Camden County, Mo.

Emergency crews responded to a fatal accident in Camden County, Mo. on Wednesday morning. The accident left four people dead and one other injured.

About the Lake of the Ozarks Fatal Crash

KDSK News is reporting the accident occurred on the Niangua Bridge on Highway 5 near Lake of the Ozarks in Camden County. The lake is located about 200 miles west of St. Louis.

A dump truck was crossing the bridge when it had a tire blowout. The driver lost control of the truck and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a pickup truck. Three occupants of the pickup truck as well as the driver of the dump truck were killed in the crash. The lone survivor was a teen boy, who was airlifted to a hospital in Columbia, Mo. with unspecified injuries.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch identifies the driver of the dump truck as Randal Estes, 56. The occupants of the pickup truck who were killed are identified as Terry Schroeder, 50; Cindy Schroeder, 46; and Dylan Schroeder, 14. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines large trucks as vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds. NHTSA estimates that in 2012, 3,291 people were killed in and an additional 104,000 people were injured in crashes involving large trucks in the U.S. Those fatalities represented a 4 percent increase from 2011. Additionally, injuries sustained in large truck accidents rose 18 percent from 2011.
