Four Killed in Trucking Accident Near Baird, Texas

Authorities are investigating a tragic collision that left four dead near Baird, Texas last Friday.

Details of the Fatal Baird Accident

According to KFYO, the fatal collision occurred just south of Baird when the driver of a pickup truck failed to stop at an intersection and broadsided a tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as 71-year-od George Earl Nowlain, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pick-up, Joel Flores Jr., 24, and one of his passengers, Fernando Ramirez, 48, were also pronounced dead at the scene. Flores’ second passenger, 51-year-old Joel Ortega-Flores, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Officials are still investigating the collision.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2012 – up 4-percent from the 3,781 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in 2012:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were listed as non-occupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • An additional 104,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2012 – up from 88,000 in 2011.
