GM Adds Vehicles to Takata Airbag Recall

Abi Reyes1 year ago

General Motors had added hundreds of vehicles to the ongoing recall of vehicles equipped with faulty Takata airbags.

GM Recall Centers on Side Impact Airbags

According to USA Today, 395 2015 model-yearl vehicles were recalled for seat-mounted side impact airbags that may rupture upon deployment, ejecting metal shrapnel throughout vehicle cabins.

The airbags were manufactured by Takata Corp., a Japanese company at the center of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation. According to reports, airbags manufactured by the company have been linked to at least eight deaths and more than 100 injuries.

While the majority of the Takata recalls have focused on frontal airbags, the Japanese manufacturer alerted GM earlier this month of a failed airbag test concerning a side impact airbag. GM responded accordingly by notifying dealers and federal regulators.

NHTSA announced last week that their investigation may expand beyond vehicles currently being recalled by 11 major automakers. Current recalls cover more than 23 million vehicles.

Models Covered by GM’s Side Impact Airbag Recall

The following vehicles were named as part of this recall:

  • 2015 Buick LaCrosse
  • 2015 Cadillac XTS
  • 2015 Chevrolet Camaro
  • 2015 Chevrolet Equinox
  • 2015 Chevrolet Malibu
  • 2015 GMC Terrain
