A woman died early Tuesday morning in Clay County, Indiana when she stopped on the side of I-70 to help a disabled motorist.

Police Investigate Fatal Clay County Accident

According to the Tribune Star, police have not yet released the woman’s name. Deputy Brian Helmer at Clay Country Sheriff’s Department claimed it might take a few days before the woman’s body could be identified.

Deputy Helmer said the accident involved a car, a pickup truck, and a semi-tractor trailer.  The crash was at 4 a.m. by the 27-mile marker four miles east of Indiana 59.

Details of the Accident

A woman driving a black Cadillac told police that she swerved into the guardrail on the right side of the eastbound lane to avoid hitting a dear.  She came to a complete stop in the passing lane as she was disabled from the impact.

Her taillights and headlights were out, so there was no sign to traffic that she was stopped.  A Texan woman in a red pickup saw the crash and pulled over to the shoulder of the guardrail to help the stranded woman.

A semi-tractor trailer drove over the hill and did not see the woman’s car stopped in the passing lane.  As a result, the semi crashed into the black Cadillac and the red pickup.  The Good Samaritan woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman in the black Cadillac was transported to Putnam County Hospital.  The semi driver was not injured.  His truck uncontrollably skidded into the median, blocking part of the passing lane.

The crash scene affected traffic for miles on I-70 eastbound lanes, Indiana 59, and U.S. 40 as well.  Traffic was slow, if not stopped, even into the neighboring city of Brazil.
