About the New Jersey Home Explosion

According to Reuters, the accident happened in the Stafford Township, roughly 85 miles south of Newark, Tuesday morning.

All five of the injured workers were employees of New Jersey Natural Gas. They were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Authorities are still investigating the incident. Images of the scene showed smoke rising from the pile of charred rubble that was once a house.

How Do Gas Explosions Happen?

Gas explosions occur when gas is linked into the air an combines with common chemicals like oxygen or carbon dioxide.

Once the gas-to-air ratio reaches a critical point between the Low Explosion Limit and High Explosion Limit, it become volatile and can be set off by a significant flame or heat source.

Once ignited the gas-air mixture rapidly expands until a portion of whatever is confining the mixture gives. The explosion is actually the sudden release of built up pressure.

Common causes of gas leaks include:

  • Faulty piping
  • Poorly maintained piping
  • Damaged meters and regulators
  • Defective control valves and connectors
  • Digging or excavation near an existing pipeline
