How Do Gas Explosions Happen?
Gas explosions occur when gas is linked into the air an combines with common chemicals like oxygen or carbon dioxide.
Once the gas-to-air ratio reaches a critical point between the Low Explosion Limit and High Explosion Limit, it become volatile and can be set off by a significant flame or heat source.
Once ignited the gas-air mixture rapidly expands until a portion of whatever is confining the mixture gives. The explosion is actually the sudden release of built up pressure.
Common causes of gas leaks include:
- Faulty piping
- Poorly maintained piping
- Damaged meters and regulators
- Defective control valves and connectors
- Digging or excavation near an existing pipeline
