Houston Deputy Killed in Head-On Collision

32-year-old Jesse Valdez III was killed Wednesday morning when his squad car was struck head-on by an SUV in east Harris County.

About the Houston Crash

According to the Houston Chronicle, the fatal accident occurred when 29-year-old Kelly Jo Ivey crossed into the eastbound lanes of East Wallisville Road and smashed into Valdez’s vehicle near Honeysuckle Street. The impact sent Valdez’s cruiser into a drainage ditch.

Valdez was airlifted to Memorial Herman Trauma Center for treatment but was pronounced dead around 1 am.

Ivey was also transported to Memorial Herman Trauma Center while a passenger in the SUV was treated at the scene. Authorities noted that Ivey showed signs of impairment and a blood sample was obtained, her passenger was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

Valdez was an 11-year-veteran of the force and a single father. He worked a 10 pm to 6 am shift with the District 3 patrol division.

  • 3,377 traffic related fatalities were recorded in 2013, marking a 1.05 percent decrease from the 3,413 deaths reported in 2012.
  • 767 people were killed in collisions that occurred at or in relation to an intersection, and 523 people lost their lives in head-on collisions.
  • Another 232,041 people were injured in auto accidents with 89,270 people sustaining serious injuries.
