Houston Police Continue Search for Hit-and-Run Driver

Authorities in Houston are continuing their search for a hit-and-run driver that fled the scene after killing a surveyor in northeast Houston.

About the Houston Pedestrian Hit-and-Run

KPRC reports the unidentified land surveyor was fatally struck while standing on the sidewalk in the 2700 block of Clinton Road.

Around 2:30 pm Thursday, a dark 2007 Toyota Camry veered onto the sidewalk, hitting the man. He was transported to Ben Taub Hospital but died later.

The driver of the Camry fled the scene on foot. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • In 2013, 3,377 traffic-related fatalities were recorded in Texas. This marked a 1.05-percent decrease from the 3,377 deaths recorded in 2012.
  • 485 of the recorded fatalities were pedestrian fatalities and 48 were pedalcyclists.
  • Another 232,041 persons were injured in auto accidents with 89,270 people sustaining serious injuries.
  • Using available crash data for 2013, TxDOT estimates:
    • One person was killed in an auto accident every 2 hours and 36 minutes.
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds.
