Houston Student Struck and Killed by Train

Authorities are investigating a fatal railroad accident in which a 16-year-old pedestrian was struck by a train in northwest Houston

Details of the Fatal Train Accident

The Houston Chronicle reports that a 16-year-old student of Waltrip High School was hit and killed by a train Wednesday while walking with another student along tracks on the city’s northwest side.

When the train arrived one teen was able to move out of the way while the other died on the scene. The train stopped and no one on board was killed.

The teen’s identity has not been revealed.

Railroad Accident Statistics

  • The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recorded 891 railroad deaths in 2013 – up 6-percent from the 840 deaths recorded in 2012.
  • The majority of those deaths (65 percent) occurred in areas other than road crossings.
  • Employees and contractors only accounted for 20 railroad fatalities in 2013.
