Hoverboards Face Ban on College Campuses

Hillary Dunkley1 year ago

The latest trend is on fire – literally. “Hoverboards”, two-wheeled devices that resemble a skateboard and gives off the impression that the user is floating, are facing recalls and bans on college campuses.

About the Hoverboard Controversy

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) discovered that the devices would catch on fire while in use or while charging, leaving many with injuries and trips to the emergency room.

Underwriters Laboratory state that although the battery packs and power supplies of hoverboards meet the standards, the hoverboards themselves do not. In addition to fire hazards, the devices poses a falling hazard which left many users with fractures and head/brain injuries.

Precautions Recommended in Hoverboard Use

Leading retailer Amazon is asking consumers to take precautions when using the device and to report injuries or fires to Safer Products.

They also suggest that consumers have a working fire extinguisher nearby while charging or using these boards in and around a home. Additionally, consumers should charge the hoverboard in an open area away from combustible materials, use protection such as a helmet and pads when operating the hoverboards, and should not use a hoverboard on or near a road.
