Illinois Man Killed in Underground Mining Accident in Franklin County

An accident in an underground mine owned by St. Louis’ OreSight Energy claimed the life of at least one worker last Tuesday.

About the Fatal Mine Accident

According to reports, Tyler D. Rath, 20, was killed in an accident in an underground mine at Sugar Camp Energy LLC located near Macedonia, Illinois.

Rath’s body was recovered and brought to the surface around 11:00 pm.

No details on the cause of death have been released; however, the mine has been shut down pending an investigation by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration as well as the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals.

Mining Injury Statistics

The following information was provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA):

  • The MSHA reports that mining accidents killed 45 people in 2014 in the U.S.
  • The state of Illinois has lost 14 miners to accidents since 2004.
  • Nearly 600 fatalities have occurred as a result of underground mining accidents in the past 10 years.
