Impaired Driving Can Be Deadly

Ariadna Cossio4 years ago

According to the CDC, approximately 30 people die from alcohol-related vehicle crashes every day. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is the most serious risk factor.

Risky Statistics

  • Only 18% of all motor vehicle accidents resulting in a death involve a substance other than alcohol
  • Those most at risk for injury or death due to impaired driving are young drivers. More than a third of drivers involved in fatal crashes with blood alcohol concentration levels of 0.08 or higher were in the narrow age range of 21-24.
  • Motorcyclists are also at extremely high risk, both because of alcohol use and because simply being on a motorcycle as opposed to a vehicle greatly increases the likelihood of death or serious injury during an accident.

How to Reduce the Risk

  • Vehicle drivers and passengers can reduce their risk of serious accidents simply by not being under the influence of any drugs or alcohol while driving, or not allowing someone intoxicated to drive them.
  • It is important to keep in mind that even some prescription drugs and common over-the-counter allergy and cold medicines can influence driving ability. (Look out for warnings on prescription labels.)
