Jerome – One Person Dead in Head-on Collision

A passenger in a pickup inolved in a police chase was killed Monday when the vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer.

Details about the Fatal Accident

KTVB News is Jerome is reporting that a passenger in a pickup truck that led the Gooding County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a chase was killed Monday morning when the truck that was being chased hit a semi-truck.

According to Idaho State Police, the chase happened at around 1 a.m. roughly one mile west of Jerome. While in pursuit, the driver of the pickup got onto Interstate 84 headed in the wrong direction. The driver of the truck drove for about seven miles headed east in the westbound lanes.

Near mile marker 164, the pickup hit a semi-truck that was headed west. The driver of the semi truck was not hurt, but a passenger in the pickup, 40-year-old Juan Vargas of Wendell, was fatally injured in the accident and died at the scene.

34-year-old Steven Pomrenke was taken into custody and booked into the Jerome County Jail on charges of driving without privileges and for failing to provide proof of insurance.

At this point, it is unknown whether or not anyone in the truck was wearing their seatbelt. The accident remains under investigation at this time.
