J&J to Stop Selling Transvaginal Mesh

Ramona Roberts5 years ago

Johnson & Johnson has announced it will discontinue sales of its transvaginal mesh products which have been linked to serious injuries, revision surgeries, and hundreds of lawsuits.

Transvaginal Mesh Complications

Transvaginal mesh is used to support damaged tissue or prolapsed organs in women. It was once seen as a high-tech improvement over traditional surgery; however, last year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that 10% of women experienced erosion or exposure of the mesh within 12 months of having it implanted. Patients complained that the mesh caused:

  • Bleeding, infection, and erosion
  • Exposure of mesh
  • Revision surgeries

J&J Sends Letters to Judges

According to reports, the company sent out information about the discontinuation in letters to judges in New Jersey and West Virginia who were overseeing patient lawsuits against the company. The surgical mesh is not being recalled but in a statement, J&J said it is being discontinued based on “changing market dynamics.”

Transvaginal Mesh Studies

Transvaginal mesh has been in the spotlight for the last few years as reports of high failure rates and revision surgeries climb. The FDA ordered J&J and five other companies to conduct rigorous studies to track the transvaginal mesh complication rates. J&J reportedly expects the FDA to waive the requirement once it phases out the products.
