Katie Chapman3 years ago

Mackenzie Wethington, 16, is in intensive care at Oklahoma City Hospital after falling 3,500 feet in a skydiving accident Saturday afternoon.

About the Skydiving Accident

  • WFAA reports that Mackenzie and her father went to Pegasus Air Sport in Chickasha, Oklahoma for her 16th birthday.
  • Mackenzie's father had reportedly promised that on her 16th birthday, he would take her skydiving.
  • During the jump, Mackenzie's chute failed to open.
  • She fell 3,500 feet and siffered from internal bleeding, a broken vertebrae, and a shattered pelvis.

Questions as to What Caused the Accident

  • According to Bob Swainson, owner of Pegasus Air Sport, Mackenzie’s parachute did open, but that there was problem with it. They are not sure what created the problem.
  • Swainson said Mackenzie did not properly follow the training that was given on how to activate a second chute.
  • Questions remain why Mackenzie was alone on her first jump, and whether or not any members of the skydiving staff assisted her in the jump.
  • The family is hiring a lawyer to level out what exactly happened in the accident
