Kia Recalls 72,000 Rio Vehicles

Kia is recalling 2006-2008 Rio vehicles due to a problem with the passenger seat airbag sensor, which is programmed to recognize children sitting in the front seat in order to keep the airbag from deploying on a child occupant. According to the recall notice, the sensor could fail to recognize a child sitting in the passenger seat, causing the airbag to deploy and injure the child during a crash.

Kia Rio 2006-2008 Vehicle Recall Information

  • This recall involves 72,568 Kia Rio vehicles from the 2006-2008 model years.
  • The recall was initiated because of a problem with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) seat sensor mat in the passenger seat.
  • The sensor mat may be subject to cracking, which can cause the OCS to stop functioning all together.
  • As a result, the system will not be able to tell whether there is a child sitting in the passenger seat during a crash and could allow the air bag to deploy on the child.
  • Air bag deployment increases the risk of injury for children sitting in the passenger seat during a crash.

Important Information for Kia Rio Owners

  • Dealers will replace the OCS seat sensor mat for free.
  • Replacements will begin July 2012.
  • Customers can contact Kia customer assistance center at 1-800-333-4542.
  • Customers may also contact The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153) or visit
