Kindergartener Killed After Being Struck By Bus

Tina Robinson3 years ago

A 5-year-old boy struck and killed by a city bus outside of a Modesto, CA elementary school on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Alan Alexander Navarro Fernandez.

Details of the Fatal Bus Accident

According to News 10 ABC, Fernandez was struck by a city bus on Wednesday afternoon shortly after school let out. A California Highway Patrol Officer, Eric Parsons, told reporters that the kindergartner saw his parents across the street and ran between two vehicles and into the path of the bus.

At this time, the driver is not believed to be at fault.

Superintendent of Modesto City Schools, Pam Able, confirmed to USA Today that district policy requires parents to pick up their children on school property and that kindergarten teachers supervise students as they leave campus.

Bus Safety and Statistics

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) estimates 221 fatalities and 13,000 injuries in police-reported motor vehicle crashes involving buses each year.

A report produced by Texas A&M University notes that approximately 20 children die each year in school bus-related accidents. The report also notes that children are susceptible to bus accidents for the following reasons:

  • Children are often in a hurry to get on/off the bus.
  • Children often act before they think.
  • Children have little experience with traffic and assume motorists will see them.

Drivers in school zones are advised to drive slowly and be alert for children that may dart suddenly into oncoming traffic.
