Law Enforcements Crack Down on Drinking and Driving

Baisha Kreuzer4 years ago

A startling 70 percent of deaths in drunk driving accidents in 2010 involved blood alcohol levels nearly twice the .08 legal limit, according to a news report by NHTSA.

The official start of the annual anti-drunk driving campaign: “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” was initiated by the joined forces of the U.S Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), and the National Center for DWI Courts.

Law Enforcements are Cracking Down Nationwide

  • More than 10,000 police departments and law enforcement organizations across the country are supporting the campaign which continues through the Labor Day holiday weekend.
  • In 2010, nearly one out of three highway deaths on U.S roads were due to alcohol related accidents. This is comparable to one death every 51 minutes.
  • More than 70% of drunk driving deaths had drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or higher.
  • The highest average BAC recorded among drunk drivers in fatal vehicle accidents was .18.

NHTSA Initiates New Ignition Interlock Guidelines

To assist the problem of drinking and driving, NHTSA worked with the National Center for DWI Courts to develop a new ignition interlock system, which requires drivers to blow into a breathalyzer-like device that is installed onto the vehicle’s dashboard. This is to confirm the driver is sober before permitting the automobile to start. This program was released last month.

NHTSA will air advertisements in major media markets across the country featuring “invisible” law enforcement officers observing individuals drinking and then catching them before they drive. The advertisement is to send the message that law enforcement officers are cracking down and will catch those who make the mistake of drinking and driving.
