Lawsuits Filed in Salmonella Sushi Outbreak
Several news outlets are reporting that lawsuits have been filed by individuals who suffered serious illness as a result of the salmonella outbreak in sushi-grade tuna. One lawsuit was filed by a heavy metal singer who was sickened during his tour.
Hundreds Ill from Tainted Tuna
At least 258 people (including at least three in Texas) have fallen ill from two rare strains of salmonella found in the tuna. The first illnesses were reported on January 28 and the most recent were on April 20.
Illnesses Linked to Tuna Used in Sushi
The salmonella has been linked to “Nakaochi Scrape,” a backmeat shaved off fish bones and added to products like ground yellowfin tuna. California-based Moon Marine USA recalled 59,000 pounds of the raw tuna from India. However, there is a chance that distributors removed the packaging before it was sold to restaurants. So some restaurants may not know they are serving potentially contaminated products.
