Listeria Linked To Ricotta Cheese: 3 Dead
According to the CDC, as of September 11, 14 people have been infected with Listeria monocytogenes after consuming Frescolina brand ricotta salata cheese, distributed by the Forever Cheese Company. Three deaths and 14 hospitalizations have been attributed to the outbreak.
About the Infected Cheese
Forever Cheese has recalled its lot #T9425 and/or production code 441202. All with sell by dates through October 2 are affected, and consumers are urged to throw out any cheeses they suspect could be affected. The cheeses were sold to retailers, restaurants, and wholesale distributors in:
- California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Nebraska, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington between June 20 and August 9.
The code 441202 was printed on the original wheel of cheese. Ricotta salata cheese is different from the more widely used ricotta cheese popular in lasagnas and other dishes. The cheese is pressed, which dries it, and salted. It is white and usually used as a grating cheese.
What is Listeria?
Listeria is a serious, but rare bacterial disease that most commonly affects the elderly, pregnant (4 of the affected people in this outbreak were pregnant, 2 were infants), and people with vulnerable immune systems. The mortality rate is about 20%, with the most common manifestations of the infection being sepsis, blood poisoning and meningitis, an inflammation of the brain. It is contracted primarily through eating infected meats and dairy products.
