Liver Injuries Linked to Diet Pills are on the Rise
Researchers have found that the number of hospital injuries linked to liver damage caused by diet pills is on the rise.
About the Diet Pill Study
“It’s really the Wild West. When people buy these supplements, it’s anybody’s guess as to what they’re getting.” – Dr. Herbert L. Bankovsky, director of the liver, digestive and metabolic disorders laboratory at Carolinas Health Care System as published by the New York Times
- According to the New York Times, researchers only analyzed the most severe cases of liver damage and claim that they actually underestimated the total number of cases.
- Even so, the study was able to conclude that diet pills account for 20 percent of all hospital visits for drug-related liver injuries – up from 7 percent a decade ago.
- While most patients recover after they stop taking the supplements, some suffer extensive injury from the pills to the point of requiring a liver transplant or even death.
- The researchers further warned that naïve teenagers are not the only ones at risk. In fact, middle-aged women looking for help losing weight were at equal risk of suffering liver injuries as teens.
The Big Picture of Dietary Supplements
It is estimated that Americans spend close to $32 billion on unproven dietary supplements every year under the impression that the pills, powders and compounds will do everything from help them build muscle and lose weight to increase concentration and prevent heart disease.
About half of all Americans report taking dietary supplements, and most of them are likely to take more than one product at a time.
The liver damage study is just the latest in a string of alarming studies into the largely unregulated dietary supplement market.
Because the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act prevents the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from approving supplements before they are sold, some products are able to reach the market adulterated, mislabeled and improperly packaged.
The FDA now estimates that 70 percent of dietary supplement companies do not follow basic quality control standards that help ensure consumer safety.
