Police are investigating a deadly school bus crash in Opelousas, LA that killed teen Nonchaulaunt Guillory early Monday morning. According to a report in The Advertiser, Guillory was not wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

More about the Fatal School Bus Crash

  • Louisiana State Trooper Stephen Hammons said the accident happened at 6:50 a.m. on La. 357.
  • Guillory was the driver of a 2000 Mazda headed south and had approached a curve. Guillory had drifted toward the right side of the road and overcorrected causing her vehicle to cross the center line.
  • A 2001 Chevy school bus driven by Lawrence Robert, 56, was traveling in the opposite direction and struck the Mazda on the right side of the vehicle.

Guillory was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Robert was treated at the scene for minor injuries; he was the only bus occupant at the time of the collision.

Seat Belt Safety Facts

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that “seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crash.” In fact, the CDC estimates that seat belt use would reduce the number of fatalities and injuries in motor vehicle accidents by half. Each year, over 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers are injured in motor vehicle crashes.
