A man in a rush to make a meeting caused a serious accident in Corpus Christi, Texas Thursday morning after flipping his vehicle and colliding with two parked trucks.

About the Corpus Christi Accident

According to KIII News, the incident occurred at the intersection of Agnes Road and Osage Street.

Authorities say the driver was speeding when he lost control of his vehicle, causing the sedan to flip over. The overturned vehicle then collided with two parked trucks before coming to rest.

The driver escaped wreckage and attempted to flee the scene, but was found moments later hiding behind a dirt pile.

The man has been detained on multiple counts, including fleeing the scene, driving without a license, and failure to stay in a single lane.

How to Prevent and Survive a Rollover Accident

Data obtained by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety suggests rollover driver-death rates among newer passenger vehicles have dropped substantially, decreasing from 27 in 2000 to six in 2012.

However, rollover accidents do still occur and it is up to drivers to take extra precautionary measures to increase their survivability.

With this in mind, Consumer Reports offers the following safety tips:

  • Newer is Safer – According to consumer reports, newer vehicles with up-to-date safety systems are less likely to be involved in a fatal rollover accident.
  • Wear Seatbelts – Safety belts keep drivers and passengers restrained. Failure to properly wear seatbelts means occupants are at an increased risk of injury or ejection when involved in a rollover accident.
  • Check Your Tires – Tires experience wear and tear overtime, and some tires may have manufacturer defects. Regular tire maintenance and keeping up to date on the latest tire recalls can greatly reduce a driver’s risk of being involved in rollover accident.
  • Be Aware of Your Speed – Higher speeds translates to more severe rollover accidents. Nearly half of all fatal rollover accidents involved vehicles that were traveling over the speed limit.
