Man Dead, Children Injured in Bell County Crash

A 21-year-old man was killed and four young children were injured as a result of a single-vehicle crash near Temple, Texas on Sunday.

About the Fatal Bell County Accident

According to KXXV, the 2005 Pontiac G6 was traveling along Old FM 95 around 10:20 pm when the vehicle drifted onto the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to spin out of control and roll.

The driver, Edwin Alejandro Cruz, 21, and two of the child passengers were ejected from the vehicle. The two remaining children were able to escape the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames.

Cruz was transported to Scott & White Memorial Hospital – he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The four children, ages 6 to 8, were transported to McLane Children’s Hospital where they were listed in serious condition. Fortunately, none of their injuries are considered life-threatening.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,413 people were killed in auto accidents in Texas in 2013 – a 1.05-percent decrease from the 3,377 deaths recorded in 2012.
  • Single-vehicle crashes accounted for 1,333 deaths recorded in 2013, and 1,883 deaths were attributed to crashes that occurred in rural areas of the state.
  • An additional 232,041 people were injured in auto accidents with 89,270 people suffering serious injuries.
