Man in Wheelchair Fatally Struck by Semi

A man is dead after being struck by a tractor-trailer on Detroit’s west side Tuesday morning – the truck driver fled the scene.

Details of the Fatal Hit-and-Run

According to the Detroit Free Press, the man in the wheelchair was crossing the street at the intersection of Grand River and West Grand Boulevard around 4 a.m. when he was struck by what witnesses claim was a tractor-trailer.

Witnesses stated that the truck was making an illegal left turn from eastbound West Grand onto Grand River when the accident occurred. Following the collision, the truck apparently stopped for a few seconds before continuing northbound.

Authorities have not yet been able to identify the victim, but they believe he is between the ages of 25 and 30. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • In 2012, 3,921 people lost their lives in traffic collisions involving large trucks – a four percent increase from 2011 when 3,781 deaths were recorded.
  • Additionally, 104,000 people suffered injuries due to trucking accidents, up from 88,000 in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents in 2012:
    • 697 (18 percent) were occupants of large trucks.
    • 2,843 (73 percent) were occupants of other vehicles.
    • 381 (10 percent) were non-occupants, including pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Trucking accidents were most likely to occur on weekdays, during the day time hours between 6:00 a.m. and 5:59 p.m.
