Man Killed in Construction Accident at Baylor University

Jose Dario Suarez, 55, and a coworker fell into the Brazos River when the equipment they were attached to keeled over into the water. Suarez died as a result of the fall. The unidentified coworker swam to safety and was sent to Providence Health Center, Waco, for hypothermia treatment.

Details of the Baylor University Construction Accident

  • Baylor University is building a pedestrian bridge over the Brazos River to connect the university campus to a new football stadium that will be built over the old Alumni building.
  • Suarez was working for a subcontractor, Derr and Isbell Construction.
  • According to KWTX, Suarez and the other man were connected to a man-lift on the bridge, which tumbled over, taking the two men with it.
  • Emergency personnel responded to the scene of the incident at 4pm on January 28th, 2014.
  • On that Tuesday, at 8:15 pm, divers from Morgan’s Point Dive Team found Suarez’s body.

Baylor University representatives extend their condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and have stopped the construction on the bridge, as of now.
