Man Killed in Howard County Trucking Accident

Authorities are investigating a trucking accident that left one man dead and another person injured in Howard County on Tuesday.

About the Fatal Trucking Accident

According to NewsWest 9, an 18-wheeler traveling northbound on Ranch Road 33 was attempting to pass another vehicle when it collided head-on with a 2013 GMC pickup.

The driver of the pickup, Cody Rhea Hare, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Philip Edward Davoust, 55, was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center for treatment and released.

Authorities are investigating the accident; no charges had been filed following the accident.

Trucking Accident Statistics

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 3,921 trucking accidents in 2012 – a 4-percent increase from the 3,781 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents in 2012:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were non-occupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Another 104,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2012, marking an 18-percent increase from 88,000 in 2011.
